# Tags and contact lists

> How to use tags to label contacts and contact lists to group them for broadcasts.

WapNotify has two ways to group contacts: **tags** for labeling and filtering, and **contact lists** for targeting broadcasts.

## Tags

Tags are color-coded labels you attach to contacts. Use them to categorize contacts by type, status, or source — for example: `lead`, `customer`, `vip`, `cold`.

### Create a tag

1. Go to **Settings → Tags**.
2. Click **New tag**.
3. Enter a name and choose a color.
4. Click **Save**.

### Add a tag to a contact

1. Open the contact record.
2. In the **Tags** field, click and type to search existing tags, or select from the dropdown.
3. Changes save automatically.

You can also assign tags during [CSV import](/contacts/import-contacts) by including comma-separated tag names in the `tags` column.

### Filter contacts by tag

In the Contacts list, use the **Tag** filter in the sidebar to show only contacts with a specific tag. This helps you find segments of your contact base quickly.

### Use tags in broadcasts

When creating a broadcast, you can target contacts by tag instead of using a list. Select **By tag** as the target type and choose one or more tags. WapNotify sends the broadcast to all contacts with any of the selected tags.

## Contact lists

Contact lists are named groups of contacts you build manually or through imports. They are primarily used as broadcast targets.

### Create a list

1. Go to **Contacts → Lists**.
2. Click **New list**.
3. Give the list a name and optional description.
4. Click **Save**.

### Add contacts to a list

1. Open a list.
2. Click **Add contacts**.
3. Search for contacts by name or phone and select them.
4. Click **Add**.

You can also add a contact to a list from their contact profile — open the contact, find **Lists**, and select the list.

### Use a list in a broadcast

When creating a broadcast, select **Contact list** as the target type, then choose the list. The broadcast sends to all contacts in the list at the time of sending.

<Note>
  Adding or removing contacts from a list after a broadcast is sent has no effect on that broadcast — the recipient list is fixed at send time.
</Note>

### Delete a list

Deleting a list removes the grouping only. The contacts themselves are not deleted.
